“I have faith in you.”
How many times have you said, or heard those words? What does it mean to have faith in someone … or something?
Faith seems to be one of those elusive, non-tangible type words. The New Oxford American Dictionary says this:
Key words: complete trust; confidence
Complete trust. Trust seems like a more tangible word, doesn’t it? Something one can better understand, relate to and wrap your head around. The dictionary’s definition of trust is this:
The thesaurus uses these synonyms when describing faith: trust, belief, confidence, conviction; optimism, hopefulness, hope.
Interestingly the antonym of faith is mistrust. But I’ll save that discussion for another post! :)
There are many, many verses in the Bible pertaining to faith. But I think the most popular scripture that describes faith is this:
Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and
knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.
Hebrews 11:1 {NCV}
So if the words faith and trust could be intermingled, let’s look at the scripture this way:
{I have} complete trust {and confidence} that what
I hope for will come to pass. Even if I can’t see it,
touch it, or hear it … I believe it to be true.
Wow! I know for one, I would love … and find much freedom in living out life in that way. Let’s chew on that until tomorrow. {and yes, I just used the term “chew on” … cuz I’m way cool like that!} :)

Faith to me means believing that no matter the hardships we face here on earth, God has something greater for us in Heaven. That none of this “stuff” really matters in the end…
Our priest spoke in his sermon today about us giving up “control of our lives” so that God can have authority over us. By giving up that control, I have to have faith that God will do something so much bigger and better with my life, than I could do by myself.

Your words are so very true. I feel compelled to add one challenging distinction. Often people who don’t know Christ use this verse to argue our faith isn’t real. They see us and ask, “Do you really have everything you hope for?” I find this the case especially when non-believers see suffering and hardships in our lives. We can say, “Yes!” without hesitation because our hope in the Lord is not based on this world’s priorities or values. In fact, Hebrews 11:13-17 clarifies this point. Simply put, due to our fallen nature we cannot find the things promised to us here on earth but rather in heavenly commune with God. So, instead of asking, “Why me?” through the storms of this life or losing confidence in Him to provide, we must thank God for all opportunities to glorify Him. The pains and joys of this life are temporary and simply venues by which we can draw closer to the Lord. God hears our praises and joins with us in our joys but He longs to embrace and carry us in times of pain. How often, in the midst of struggles, do we turn inward and question God, instead of running to Him for refuge? He will provide everything we need according to His plan and purposes. We have to remember that God doesn’t conform His will or plans to our earthly or human standards. Hebrews 12:1-2 sums up chapter 11 the best with, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”
