Radical is defined as thorough or complete. Let’s continue reading today with the understanding we’re talking about thoroughly and completely, loving and forgiving.
There’s a story in the Bible that moves me in a profound way each time I read it. The story can be found in John 8:3-11. It tells of a woman caught in the act of adultery and brought before Jesus for judgment.
It was dawn when Jesus appeared in the temple courts at the Mount of Olives. A crowd was gathered and Jesus sat before them to teach them. As Jesus began teaching, the teachers of the law brought the adulterous woman before Him, “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
It’s important to note it was dawn, she was caught in the act, and taken to Jesus while He was speaking in a public forum. Translation, she was most likely naked or wearing very little and standing before a large crowd afraid and humiliated and naked.
The Bible says Jesus stooped to the ground to write something in the dust. There’s no actual account of what He wrote. People, scholars, have taken guesses . . . my thought is He might‘ve been buying some time before answering. Finally Jesus stood and said to them, “Anyone here who has never sinned can throw the first stone at her.” And he bent to the ground again, writing in the dust.
The Bible goes on to say, “Those who heard Jesus began to leave one by one, first the older men and then the others. Jesus was left there alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus raised up again and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one judged you guilty?”
She answered, “No one, sir.”
Then Jesus said, “I also don’t judge you guilty. You may go now, but don’t sin anymore.”
Come on . . . the woman was clearly guilty. She was caught in the act and was wearing the naked truth!
But Jesus . . . filled with love and forgiveness, didn’t judge her guilty. His only request was that she didn’t commit the sin again.
Let’s take a minute to ask ourselves . . . if we were in the crowd that day and witnessed the events that took place, how would Jesus’ decision affect us?
Before we answer these questions, think of a crime so huge the perpetrator would deserve death. Realize, adultery in that day was a huge crime. A crime so big it deserved an immediate and painful death.
Would we agree, honor, and encourage others with His decision? Or would we be outraged and turn on Him {and the adulterer} with our own judgments?

Really makes you think, doesn’t it? His grace is sufficient – as is His forgiveness – and while it’s wonderful to be on the “consumer end” of that it is convicting to reflect on what it means when looking at others.
This really makes you think about our decisions and our judging of others. I like to think that witnessing would have changed my decision about the situation but I cannot say for sure especially when adultery really was like the norm.
