In honor of my birthday, I thought I’d post about Wynter’s recent birthday party.
We are huge movie buffs … we go to almost every new release and one of our favorite family things to do is “movie night” in our home theatre.
Anyway. We were at a movie a few months ago, when a “Where The Wild Things Are” {hereto-forth will be referred to as WTWTA} trailer came on. I was sitting next to Wynt and asked if she’d like to see it for her birthday party. She said yes and my mind started spinning with all the fun things I might be able to do for her party.
I was way ahead of the game and thought I’d have fun creating some party-goodness!
I started with her party invite. I scoured the web for ideas. There weren’t too many out there, but I did draw inspiration from a couple {Party Perfect and ehow.com}.
I found a pre-printed notecard from Peaceable Kingdom Press {no longer available}, and Photoshopped Wynter’s face into the design. Then I found the Men In Black font and started with the meat of the invite.
I started with the wording, font, colors, general layout … but as always, wasn’t looking quite the way I wanted. So … as always, I enlisted the help of my trusted designer friend, Nellie.
She’s a genius, of course, and came back with this! I loved it!
No invitation is complete without a dressed-up envelope. I started with curry colored envelopes {found here}. I also used these address labels for the front of the envelope. Then traced the “Max” outline from here. I enlisted Nellie’s help again and wa-la …
When throwing a party … it’s just not complete for me, if I don’t have a cake to match my theme. I’ve been working with Sweetness By Alice in Milwaukee lately, and she’s been creating some amazing delights for us!
Okay, so for the party … I rented our local theatre for a private viewing of WTWTA. I had some fun ideas of decorations {vines, trees, etc.}, but was limited by the restrictions the theatre has. So that was a bummer that I couldn’t decorate to the “hilt” like I wanted. But … oh well … less work, right? :)
Next were the creation of some signs for the theatre. The last couple of years, I’ve encouraged the girls to ask for donations to different places, rather than receiving gifts for themselves. This year, Wynter asked for books that she would donate to her school library.

I’ve loved, loved, loved all the different blog posts I’ve been seeing with photo booths … so decided to do one of our own for Wynter’s party.
For the backdrop, I bought a large movie poster and had it mounted on foam core. I really love this idea … what a great way to remember everyone who came!
And of course … mama with the birthday girl. I rarely, rarely get photos with the kids … so was glad I asked Taylor to take this photo of me and Wynt.

And the kids loved having the concession counter all to themselves!

And now for a fun story … we still haven’t actually seen Where The Wild Things Are.
Say what?!?
So, WTWTA is rated PG, and we’ve watched just about every PG movie that’s been out there. This party is geared toward 6 year olds … and I realize we may be a little more liberal with letting our kids watch certain {scary} things. For kids at least …
But how bad or scary could this movie be? The trailer looked awesome and completely kid-friendly … and it’s rated PG!
The weekend of the movie’s release, Taylor and I were on our way to New York. I usually pick up some celebrity gossip mags for the plane ride, and as I’m reading through them, I see some pretty strong reviews for this movie. They say it’s scary. It’s not for anyone under 7. It’s dark.
Blagh! What am I going to do? I don’t want to be responsible for a room full of terrified 6 year olds!
I quickly check into any other new movie releases … I’m in luck … Astro Boy is being released. I check with the movie theatre and yes! they can change the movie.
Whew!
As a side note … in the meantime, I got a note from a friend of mine who has kids the same age as Wynter and Hunter. They weren’t going to be able to make the party, so decided to take the kids to see the movie … she sent me a note saying it was pretty dark, the kids were scared, and she and her hubs were still wondering what the purpose of the movie was.
Then Taylor and I went to see it while we were in NYC … she fell asleep. I thought it was okay … and I’d let my girls see it {although, we still haven’t}, but I was super glad I had already decided to change the show.
I sent out an email to all the parents letting them know that I’d be changing the movie … but not the theme. Ha! I worked too hard on everything and wasn’t about to change it now. :)
Anyway … Wynter had a great birthday, the party was a hit, and I highly recommend Astro Boy! :)
