keep the little in your girl :: book club {post four}

Train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

Thanks for joining us again as we discuss our next installment of Six Ways to Keep the “Little” in Your Girl.  These chapters really hit home with me and with sadness, I’ll share why …

Unfortunately, with my 15 year old, I learned the hard way.  She had a computer in her room when she was younger … with no filters and no control over it.  I was naive in thinking, “What in the world could she possibly get into that wasn’t appropriate?  She doesn’t even know how to use the internet.”

My-oh-my how wrong I was!  In an innocent search for something {who knew they were learning how to use the internet at school?!  apparently not this then-not-involved-enough mom!} … my daughter happened on some very inappropriate content.

And sadly, from that … I had to have a discussion with her that I wasn’t ready to have … more importantly, she wasn’t ready to have.

My poor girl has ended up being my “experiment” in so many ways!  I’m definitely learning from her what I should be doing and what I shouldn’t be doing … and what I’ve learned from that experience is that kids should definitely not have computers in their rooms.  And if they do have access to them, make sure they’re in a high-traffic area of the house, that there are filters in place, and that you’re limiting the amount of time they spend on them.

And on that topic … be sure you’re modeling what you’re preaching.  If they have time limits mom … you should too!  Ahem, duly-noted to self! ;)
